Her Avenging Angel by Felicity Heaton – Review

picDetailheravengingangelReviewed by Zara B.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Felicity Heaton’s Her Angel series continues strong with the 7th book, Her Avenging Angel, featuring Nevar and Lysia. Two strong, mysterious individuals with dark pasts, these two are made for each other. From their strong personalities to their endeavoring quest for love, the two will draw you into their world and keep you turning the page!

Nevar was an angel of Heaven before he made a contract with the King of Demons. Now, he’s forced to guard the Great Destroyer in an endless pursuit to keep both Heaven and Hell and all that’s between safe. Only you can’t change the inevitable so when it comes time to fight the Great Destroyer, will Nevar be able to sacrifice Lysia for all mankind?

I’m a fan of Ms. Heaton’s angel series. There hasn’t been one I haven’t enjoyed—whether short or long. She creates a vivid world and brings out the humanity in ethereal beings that might not be realistic if she weren’t such a masterful word spinner. In this latest installment, I thought I wouldn’t like Nevar. He wasn’t very honorable or caring in the previous book. But the way Ms. Heaton spun his story not only made you fall for the guy, but wish things could be different for him through to the last page. In contrast, I didn’t think I’d ever get used to or like Lysia. She has a naive, almost lamb to the slaughter vibe to her. Then come out her teeth, so to speak. Having survived a fierce battle that she can’t recall, she’s lost in the human world. She seeks to find someone to help her, so when she comes across Nevar it’s inevitable that he immediately recognizes her language and his need to protect her even if he doesn’t know why. But that’s not all he feels for the beauty. Their attraction is instantaneous. When he learns the Great Destroyer has awakened, though, he puts all his feelings for her aside and does what he’s commanded to do. In the end, I loved how it played out. I was doubtful Ms. Heaton could pull off the conclusion she did. It felt like she’d written herself into a corner a time or two, but it all worked out the way it was supposed. And only made me eager to read the next installment!

About the book…

Once a proud angel of Heaven, Nevar is now a servant of Hell, bound to a new master—the King of Demons. Consumed by darkness and driven to seek revenge, he set in motion a series of events that awakened the Great Destroyer, a force that will bring about the apocalypse. Now, he is the creature’s master and the fate of our world rests in the hands of an angel with only darkness in his heart.

Lost in the mortal realm without any recollection of how she came to be there, Lysia is only aware that she has survived a great battle. When she stumbles into a demon bar, she finds more than a chance to discover what happened to her—she finds a dark and deadly angel warrior who stirs fire in her veins and awakens soul-searing passion she cannot deny.

With the mounting threat of the Great Destroyer, the forces of Heaven and Hell against him, and a band of dangerous angels intent on capturing Lysia on his heels, can Nevar protect the beautiful woman who is light to his darkness and find the strength to save the world?

Healing A Highlander’s Heart by Keira Montclair – Review

healingahighlandersheart-keiramontclairReviewed by Cara M.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Healing A Highlander’s Heart by Keira Montclair is the second book in her Grant Clan series and features Lady Brenna Grant—a talented healer—and Clan Chieftain Quade Ramsay.

When Lady Brenna Grant is awoken in the night by a dark, mysterious warrior holding a knife and requesting she bring her healing supplies, her only thought was to save her sister from being harmed and deal with whoever needed her help. Little did she know she would be healing a Lowland Chieftain…in more ways than one!

Honestly, I wanted to love this book. It just wasn’t possible. It had so much potential, but unfortunately, the poor writing and weak hero left me sadly bored and wishing the author had rethought the use of ‘authentic’ dialect and a ‘telling’ form of writing rather than ‘showing’ through imagery. While Lady Brenna was interesting, strong and clever, her match wasn’t at all what I imagine a strong, in-charge clan leader to be. He lacked the in-charge attitude. He even backed down (in his thoughts) from Brenna’s brother Alex. He seemed resigned that Alex would best him. I just don’t see that. If he was a true highlander or lowlander of the time, I imagine he’d be well versed in warring/fighting and wouldn’t back down from anyone.

Besides my issues with the hero, there were other problem with the story. First, while the author apologies in a way at the end for having too many, it didn’t help. There were too many illnesses. One or two to show Brenna’s healing capabilities were enough. I had hope there would be more intrigue since it was hinted at so often. Really, it is a pitfall I’ve found in authors without much experience or editing. They tend to throw everything in but the kitchen sink, but don’t follow through. If you read about the daughter’s illness, then the ‘surprise’ persons (omitting so as not to spoil it for anyone) illness, plus the Chief’s illness…I’d say you were beyond tired of hearing how great or clever Brenna was at healing. Then throw in the Chief’s emotional baggage from his previous marriage—to which Brenna is the only one who can get through to him wasn’t his fault or a curse—and you’re probably done with the book before you begin to see there might be some intrigue around the corner. Some potential. You might be bored and miss the twist ending. I will admit I didn’t see that coming. But all the flaws took away from what could have been a great story.

Overall, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the book. I can say I found it difficult to read. I plan to find another by this author to compare this work with as I enjoy her thought process, if not her work.

Her Secret, His Baby by Tanya Michaels – Review

“…a clean, quirky, emotion-filled [story]…Her Secret, His Baby.”

Rating: ★★★★☆

Arden Cade is the ultimate good girl. But one night when she’s seeking comfort and to forget the tragedies in her past, she finds herself giving in to impulse and a hunky cowboy attending a wedding she is photographing. Only her encounter with Garrett doesn’t go exactly as planned. And their one night together has lasting consequences…

Ms. Michaels has a clean, quirky, emotion-filled way of writing, and it shines brightly in Her Secret, His Baby. From the beginning you feel for Arden. She’s sweet, strong and so tragically wounded from all the loses in her life. So when she finds herself photographing a wedding on her deceased best friend’s birthday, she’s hurting. She’s in desperate need to forget the past if only for a little while. Enters Garrett Frost. Hunky rancher and friend of the groom, Garrett is drawn to Arden and doesn’t hesitate to give in to his desire for her. But when the morning comes and she leaves with only a note, he assumes she didn’t feel the pull between them he did. Only Arden did feel something, more than she felt was fair to Garrett, and really what kind of relationship could they have with him living so far away?

But several months later when Garrett gets some devastating news at the ranch, he needs time away and heads back to his childhood friend. And maybe he had the idea he’d run into Arden again! Only Arden has a secret…and that secret coupled with the betrayal he just left behind makes him hard and a little unforgiving.

By the end of the book, you feel sorry for Garrett but you waiver between that same feeling and a little confusion as to why Arden would feel the need to keep her secret. Definitely an emotional roller coaster between these two who are so cute together! And it has left me eager to read more by Ms. Michaels!

Her Kind of Trouble by Sarah Mayberry – Review

“…I had a hard time believing this was a romance at all, really.”

Review by Mara B.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Sarah Mayberry’s Her Kind of Trouble gives you Vivian Walker and Seth Anderson. Both are at different places in their life when they come together the first time, and then find each other yet again later.

This story reminds me more of a women’s fiction story…with a bit of a man’s fiction (if there was such a thing!). See, I couldn’t get a handle on it. Parts were more about poor Vivian who screwed up and flaked most of her adult life, then you have the playboy who turns dad and his learning to handle the changes in his life. Then you add in some crazy chemistry and it almost felt like I should be reading a Harlequin Blaze book. I don’t think the characters were that loveable overall. The secondary characters seemed like they’d had enough of the heroine’s antics most of the time and weren’t really that supportive especially in the beginning. You also have the hero who thought the heroine was easy (and she apparently was/is???) and then changes his mind when she helps him take care of the baby from a woman he’s impregnated (without remembering it by the way) who is now in a coma. Really, I didn’t feel the happy ending. This was more of a situational lust thing in my opinion. There were so many unresolved issues and feelings that I had a hard time believing this was a romance at all, really. Sad, but I think this was the final straw for me on Sarah Mayberry titles. I couldn’t finish her last book I tried, Her Favorite Rival, and almost didn’t finish this one.

Hell for Leather by Julie Ann Walker – Review

“…riveting tale will leave you breathless and more than a tad heated up as you maneuver your way through government agency rederick, terrorist insanity, and the emotional hang-ups of a sexy tough guy.”

Reviewed by Cara M.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Julie Ann Walker’s distinct voice shines through in her latest Black Knights Inc. book, Hell For Leather. Featuring ex-FBI agent Bryan ‘Mac’ McMillan and bar owner and forensic accountant Delilah Fairchild, this riveting tale will leave you breathless and more than a tad heated up as you maneuver your way through government agency rederick, terrorist insanity, and the emotional hang-ups of a sexy tough guy.

Ex-FBI agent turned Black Knight operative, Mac has solid reasons for keeping his distance from the super sexy Delilah. Not only does she remind him of someone from his past, but she could jeopardize his goal of returning to his hometown and reclaiming his legacy. Only four years is a long time to hold out, especially when the sexy bar owner comes to him and his friends needing help when her uncle suddenly goes missing. Though he’s determined to hold out, Delilah is just as determined to get to the bottom of Mac’s behavior toward her and what he has against her. End the end, chemistry can’t be denied and the two explore—for one night—what each has felt since their first meeting.

Delilah is desperate. Her uncle has disappeared and she’s certain something bad has happened to him. Her first thought after the police inform her she must wait the required twenty-four hours before they’ll treat it as a missing person is to ask the Black Knights for help. Or specifically Mac. There’s just something about him that does it for her—even though he has spurned every one of her advances since they met.

But her fear and the attempts on Delilah’s life push Mac past his limit and he can no longer stop the need to comfort her…and more. But can Mac let the past go and claim the woman of his dreams? Or will he let her go in order not to repeat the past?

Ms. Walker has a fabulous voice that makes me think she has a touch of ‘Texas’ in her. There were a few times her comments (and they could only be hers as I couldn’t imagine the characters saying things like ‘wait for it…” or something similar) did throw me out of the story. But most of the time it was riveting. Her insight into the mind of a terrorist and her ability to meld the action with the romance was shown in Hell For Leather. There were a couple of other issues, like Delilah not dating or having sex for four years that I found unbelievable. Frankly a guy turns you down only so many times before you’d seek solace elsewhere, especially knowing he more than likely was as well, but she wrote the scene where he finally gives in to temptation well. For those reasons, I couldn’t give a higher rating. Though I do enjoy this series and look forward to reading more!

How to Handle a Heartbreaker by Marie Harte – Review

“…characters are fresh, not cookie cutter…situations are interesting yet realistic…though terribly sweet and emotional in so many parts, the heat the main characters put off will have you fanning yourself!”

Reviewed by Larissa M.

Rating: ★★★★★

How to Handle a Heartbreaker, Marie Harte’s second book in her sexy McCauley Brothers series, steams up the pages once again giving you the hunky, emotionally scarred ‘brother’ Brody Singer. She pairs him with his brother’s sexy yet insecure next door neighbor, Abby Dunn.

Following the fabulous first book, The Troublemaker Next Door, I worried if Ms. Harte could pull off another hit. You know how sometimes the first book or the last are always the best and those in-between books often fall short. That is so not the case!

Brody Singer was all but adopted by the McCauley family at the tender age of six. He’s the best friend and business partner of Flynn from The Troublemaker Next Door (Book One). Flynn and Brody are often referred to as the twins because they share everything with each other. But there are things about Brody even Flynn doesn’t know. Things he’s ashamed of. Parts of himself he’s always hidden…that is until Abby.

Healing from an emotionally draining relationship that has left her questioning herself on many fronts, Abby isn’t sure becoming involved with Brody is a good idea. But there’s something about him that draws her in. He’s hot, no doubt. But there are many layers to him that have her opening up and sharing her dirtiest fantasies, the same ones that made her ex call her a freak. Only Brody isn’t turned off by her adventurous side. He’s having a hard time controlling his need for her.

Still, there are things from his past that put up emotional barriers. Can these two make it through to a happily ever after? Or will Abby have what it takes to handle her heartbreaker?

As with the first book in this series I was hard-pressed to put it down once I started reading. The characters are fresh, not cookie cutter. The situations are interesting yet realistic. And though terribly sweet and emotional in so many parts, the heat the main characters put off will have you fanning yourself! Add in the addition of a new one, Del—who I’m hoping pairs up with Mike!—you’ll see the same secondary characters as with the first book. A sneak into the lives of the McCauley parents, and more of the sneaky, adorable Colin and this book just leaves you wanting more!

In fact, I am eager for the next installment as I believe it will be Cam and Vanessa and the sparks those two set off each other will have the already paired off couples hiding…in their beds, hopefully! 😉
