Snow Angel Cove by Raeanne Thayne – Review

Reviewed by Alex C.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Raeanne Thayne’s Snow Angel Cove is a super sweet romance you won’t be able to put down!

When Eliza Hayward gave up everything to come to a small town and manage the only hotel there, she never dreamed tragedy would strike and she would be without not only a job but a place to stay the very day she showed up! And to make matters worse, she is hit by Aidan Caine’s car while crossing an icy road!

Aidan is a fast-paced computer genius who is facing some serious life changing issues. He’s drawn to the small town after he purchases several pieces of real estate from a friend. He decides to give his family an old fashioned Christmas and sets in to restore Snow Angel Cove to it’s former glory. Only time is running out, so when he hits Eliza and realizes she needs him as much as he needs her expertise, they strike a deal…that benefits them both!

I have loved the Caine men in each of Raeanne’s books. They are strong, family oriented and are generally good guys. This one was no different. Aidan was strong, often more than he should have been, and just what Eliza needed. There was one part that I felt was forced and a convenient situation, but I’d rather keep that as a surprise for when you’re reading. It didn’t detract too much from the romance, but it did make me think what a coincidence this element was. Eliza was also what Aiden needed, and at the perfect time in his life. An enjoyable read to be sure.

Riding Home by Vicki Lewis Thompson – Review

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Finishing up her recent Sons of Chance trilogy, Vicki Lewis Thompson gives us Jeannette Trenton’s story. Some of you may recall Jeannette from the last two books, Riding High and Riding Hard. She was engaged to Reagan, and then slept with his best friend and business partner, Drake.

Needless to say I was skeptical if I’d even finish this book—and am sad to say it took a lot for me to do it. I know the main reason is that I have strong feelings about unfaithfulness…even for a ‘decent’ reason. Though I believe in second chances, I’m wondering how realistic this situation could be and if the people involved would really forgive and move on.

Ultimately, I was torn. I found the ‘cheater’ heroine sad because the hero Zach Powell is pretty much fabulous, and he certainly deserves more because while I felt the heat and chemistry I had issues believing their would really be a forever after. Seriously, could Jeannette ever really be trusted not to have cold feet or feel trapped? Or would she learn from her past and do the right thing and leave the other person before committing such a betrayal again?

Since I adore Vicki Lewis Thompson, I finally finished this story. As I mentioned I liked Zach a lot. And I enjoyed Jeannette when I could forget she’d hurt Reagan. But as with Riding Hard I found it hard to not feel as though the entire story was a bit contrived in order to add a story to the set. Does that mean I won’t read the next Chance story…no. In fact, I already have! I reviewed A Last Chance Christmas and found it awesome! So if you’re ready for a good VLT you may want to grab that one!

About the book…

Perfect is good.

Imperfect is even better…

City-slicker lawyer Jeannette Trenton is about as welcome at the Last Chance Ranch as a rattlesnake at a square dance. She’s there to atone for one major mistake. But Jeannette’s pretty sure righting her big wrong does not include thinking lustful thoughts about the ranch’s new cowhand….

Zach Powell knows Jeannette’s type—a wound-up-tight perfectionist with one eye on her email at all times. Heck, that used to be him. She needs to shake it loose, face her imperfections and allow herself to make mistakes. There’s definitely no mistake about the wickedly sexy vibe between them. This gal is gonna have to "cowboy up"…or miss the ride of her life!

cover50597-medium Nothing short of a miracle can restore Eliza Hayward’s Christmas cheer. The job she pinned her dreams on has gone up in smoke—literally—and now she’s stuck in an unfamiliar, if breathtaking, small town. Precariously close to being destitute, Eliza needs a hero, but she’s not expecting one who almost runs her down with his car!

Rescuing Eliza is pure instinct for tech genius Aidan Caine. At first, putting the renovation of his lakeside guest lodge in Eliza’s hands assuages his guilt—until he sees how quickly he could fall for her. Having focused solely on his business for years, he never knew what his life was missing before Eliza, but now he’s willing to risk his heart on a yuletide romance that could lead to forever.

A Last Chance Christmas by Vicki Lewis Thompson – Review

Rating: ★★★★★

Continuing her Sons of Chance series, Vicki Lewis Thompson offers you a fabulous little romance with your holiday spirit!

Ben Radcliffe had one goal in mind when he delivered a custom saddle to the Last Chance, get paid and possibly some referrals. But when Jack Chance invites him to stay for a few days to see his saddle revealed, he can’t pass up the chance. Just like he can’t pass up the chance to engage in a little flirtation with academic Molly Gallagher—a Chance cousin.

Molly is at the ranch working on a genealogy project for the Chance/Gallagher family. More comfortable with her computer and old journals, she’s surprised at the attraction between her and Ben. And even more surprised when she acts on it!

Ms. Thompson has a winner here. While not intricate or all that ‘busy’ plot wise, I enjoy the book immensely. More so than even her last set of Sons of Chance books. I felt Molly was mousy but interesting. She wasn’t really a pushover but not exactly brash. Almost clueless about her appeal. It was fun to watch her and Ben interact. Ben was a hunk. He was modest and very sweet. All of his interactions with others showed a vulnerability and possibly a yearning to be part of something he’d never had before…family. The book did set up a future book, and I found I’m eager to read the next installment!

About the book…

A Christmas kiss from a cowboy…

Ben Radcliffe reckons it’ll be a cold day in hell before he considers a serious relationship or family of his own—with good reason. When he delivers a "secret" present to the Last Chance Ranch, however, Ben catches a glimpse of what family could be. And suddenly this lone cowboy finds himself under the mistletoe…planting one heck of a kiss on a stunning woman!

Genealogist and academic Molly Gallagher is all about family. And even if Ben’s secrets make him as skittish as a wild mustang, there’s nothing Molly loves more than an enigma. Especially a ridiculously sexy one! But the magic of Christmas—and the Last Chance Ranch—might not be enough to wrangle a cowboy who can’t trust himself…

Jingle Spells by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclair, Andrea Laurence – Review

Reviewed by Cara M.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Jingle Spells is a treasure trove of holiday stories all wrapped together into one magical package!

Featuring stories from Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclaire and Andrea Laurence, this collection centers around the Evergreen siblings—a family of wizards charged with managing Christmas and all it entails!

Naughty or Nice? by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Cole Evergreen isn’t just the oldest sibling of the Evergreen clan, he’s also the CEO of Evergreen Industries. Not to mention he’s a genious. And once upon a time as an MIT student, he fell hard for Taryn Harper—a girl smarter than him! But when he was needed at home, Cole had to drop everything—including Taryn—to pick up the leadership torch and ensure his family’s way of life was preserved. Now years later, Taryn wants some type of closure! And what better way to do it than to prove Cole’s security isn’t up to snuff?

I’m a fan of Ms. Thompson’s work in any format—though preferably the cowboy one!—so I wasn’t sure what to expect with her writing a more ‘enchanted’ type but I enjoyed this one a lot. The characters came to life, and she set up the other siblings well. That Taryn was perfect for Cole was just another fabulous nugget to an interesting concept.

She’s a Mean One by Rhonda Nelson

In She’s a Mean One, Ms. Nelson brings together the once whimsical girl turned serious psychologist, Lark DeWynter and Mr. Christmas Spirit himself, Ethan Evergreen. Charged with ensuring the level of Christmas spirit stays up, Ethan must make rounds to dissuade the negative impact Lark’s more practical reasoning often causes. After several years of talk shows and bantering, Ethan quickly realizes he wants more from Lark than spirited words…only can he convince her to give him and Christmas a shot?

There is nobody who does sexy/sweet romance better than Rhonda Nelson. And this story—though short—is no exception. Ethan is loveable, yet manly. He’s smart and resourceful. And he isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. Lark is smart, sexy and independent. Yet she knows what’s in her heart. A fantastic addition to this collection, for sure!

His First Noelle by Kira Sinclair

Noelle Frost and Dash Evergreen have some troubling history. The two came together despite Noelle being a ‘mixed’ breed born of two rival clans. Though her father is Winter and she was raised with them, she never felt like one of them. But can they move past their history and make a future?

I’ll admit this wasn’t my favorite. Though I liked the characters well enough, there was just something about the insecurities of the ‘strong’ heroine and the secret keeping hero that didn’t set right. But in general it was cohesive with the rest of the stories and moved the plot along.

Silver Belle by Andrea Laurence

The final story in this collection is the only sister, Belle Evergreen. For a long time, Belle’s carried on a secret, no-strings affair with the hunky contractor, Nick St. John. But with Santa gone, Belle is the one in charge of replacing him. Her job heats up and her affair is in the way!

Being the last, this story offered up the chance of being fabulous or perhaps a dud. It came through. While not really fabulous, it was nice. I liked Nick. Belle not so much. I enjoyed her in the other stories, but this one made me feel like she was shallow and ungrateful. And somewhat a user when it came to Nick.

Ultimately, though I would recommend this entire book to anyone!

About the book…

To protect Christmas, this family of wizards will have to use a whole different kind of magic…

Part of the Winter clan, the Evergreen family is considered magical nobility. While Evergreen Industries in picturesque Gingerbread, Colorado, might look like an ordinary office building, this is where the magic of Christmas unfolds. Above Santa’s workshop, the Evergreens hold court, manage Christmas and, sometimes against their will and better judgment, fall in love. When it comes to love, the Evergreens know that sometimes you have to play a little naughty to get exactly what—or who—you want from Santa.

Celebrate the holidays with Evergreen siblings Cole, Ethan, Dash and Belle in this enchanting collection.

Riding Hard by Vicki Lewis Thompson – Review

“…not as hot or as endearing as the last…installment in [Thompson’s] Sons of Chance series…”

Reviewed by Zara B.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

While certainly not as hot or as endearing as the last, Vicki Lewis Thompson’s next installment in her Sons of Chance series, Riding Hard, tries the boundaries of friendship and romance. It gives us the ‘redeemed cheater’ and the ‘innocent girl’ from a resentful mother.

Psychology student Tracy Gibbons is house-sitting Regan and Lily’s animal rescue when she takes in a horse ready to foal. In her need, she must rely on Regan’s best friend and betrayer, veterinarian Drake Brewster. The two have chemistry. And while Tracy is the small-town girl who is reaching for more, Drake is a man who admitted to seducing and sleeping with his best friend’s fiancé (see Riding High). Drake is out of her league. He’s a womanizer who wants to be better. Though many in town discourage his pursuing anything with Tracy, he isn’t detoured (though he originally says he won’t!)—especially not when Tracy all but throws herself at him.

I will be honest and say I didn’t enjoy this book all that much. What I did enjoy was the small glimpses at the past characters. The entire book felt almost contrived. The dialogue was stilted and somewhat unbelievable. It could be the whole ‘redeemed cheater’ that threw me off. I can handle a womanizer in my stories, especially a cowboy rake who meets his match. Unfortunately, Drake didn’t get drunk one night and ‘accidently’ sleep with his best friend’s girl he did it knowingly. And while the affable Regan seems to have forgiven and forgotten, I find it harder to believe. And when Drake actually admits he did it on purpose (and his reason is lame at best!), I was ill disposed to dislike him. What Thompson wrote off using her characters like Josie as his southern charm, all I could see what the sneak that would say anything to get what he wants from people.

If you’ve read any of my other reviews you know I’m a HUGE VLT fan. I enjoyed the first book in this latest trilogy from this series. However, I am hard pressed to enjoy this one and I don’t know how I’ll enjoy reading the last part in this triangle finding love at The Last Chance Ranch, Riding Home. Honestly, I’m having a hard time starting it knowing that some poor guy is going to be stuck with a woman who didn’t take her relationship to a man she was ready to wed more seriously or respect herself enough not to cheat. But I’ll try. Who knows. This one could be handled a little better than the self recrimination/guilt which was peppered with a lot of forgiveness from the man wronged in Riding Hard. I honestly didn’t feel a lot of redeeming qualities in Drake. His character needed to be explored more, I think. And Tracy certainly needed to ‘grow’ up in more ways than just showing she has the courage for sex. So we’ll see how Jeanette’s story unfolds.
