Whisper to Me by Christina Lee – Review

Reviewed by Alex C.

Rating: ★★★★★

As you’ve come to expect with a Christina Lee young adult, Whisper to Me is well written and filled with angst and sexual chemistry. Two broken characters trying to escape the past and pressures of the future, Kai and Rachel are friends. Only at different points they both want more, but aren’t sure how to make their relationship take that turn. Time and a lot of emotion bring them to the place they need to be…but the trip there is like riding a roller coaster!

Christina Lee is a master storyteller. She has the ability to draw you in from the beginning, hit hard topics like suicide, drugs, sex, etc. and bring you out the other side with a strong romance. Each character is thought out and has such a compelling back story you immediately feel a connection even if you disapprove of how they cope. Reading this type of story always takes a toll on me. I become emotionally invested in the characters and when written well I feel their emotions as if they were my own. This story was no different. Enjoyable and a perfect addition to this series!

About the Book…

At college, Rachel has a reputation for being a sarcastic flirt with a thing for star athletes. No one at school knows that she’d had her heart ripped to shreds by her high school sweetheart, who’d driven them both off the side of the road on a borrowed motorcycle, and then abandoned her. No one knows the real Rachel Mattson—except one person…

Ever since he helped nurse his sister’s feisty best friend back to health, pierced bass player Kai Nakos has been head over heels in love. But the supposed bad boy can’t risk letting Rachel know the truth—especially now that the two of them are back in their hometown for the summer, together for the first time since the months following that fateful night. Never mind that Rachel’s ex is back, groveling for her forgiveness.

Shaken by her ex’s return, Rachel finds herself turning to the one guy she knows she can trust. Kai is willing to hide his feelings for her, just to have Rachel touch him again. After all, this is only a temporary fling. Until it becomes something more. But maybe it had been more all along.

SEDUCTIVE SUPERNATURALS: 12 Tales of Shapeshifters, Vampires & Sexy Spirits by Erin Quinn, Caridad Piñeiro, Erin Kellison, Lisa Kessler, Chris Marie Green, Mary Leo – Review

Reviewed by Larissa M.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Seductive Supernatural’s is a collection of 12 tales ranging from shape shifters and vampires to spirits. In reviewing an anthology, I usually take each book and do a detailed review about each. Since there are so many here I’m not sure I’ll do that. Especially since so many are not really worth reading…in my opinion…but there are some that stood out and I wished were showcased separately so I wouldn’t have to pull up such a large file to read just that one book again—if I wanted to do so. But since they are and I was asked for an honest review, here goes.

DIABLO SPRINGS by Erin Quinn:

This is one that I didn’t really care for. The writing wasn’t clear and engaging. I didn’t find the characters really that relatable and I didn’t find the whole plot believable.

VAMPIRE REBORN by Caridad Pineiro:

I found myself skimming this one. The story did not engage me from the get-go so I kept hoping something would snap me into the story. It didn’t.

SHADOW FALL by Erin Kellison:

I did like this one. Erin Kellison left me engaged in the plot and I found I enjoyed seeing what would happen with Annabella. Definitely not a fresh plot, but an interesting one.

NIGHT ANGEL by Lisa Kessler:

Mystical and interesting, I enjoyed the hero and heroine in this short story. I found the idea of the heroine being deaf intriguing, but I was a bit disappointed that wasn’t fixed for her in the end. But alas, she did get a hunky, near-God instead. I would have enjoyed more of this story.

SHADOWS TILL SUNRISE by Chris Marie Green:

Again, found this one hard to get into. I didn’t really get a clear picture of what was happening. The descriptions and dialogue left me a bit ‘out of the story’ so to speak.

SHADOW AT TWILIGHT by Mary Leo:

Though I had high hopes for this one as a romance with a ghost/spirit seemed very interesting. Add in the boss/assistant scenario and I knew it should be good. But again, found this one hard to get into. I didn’t really get a clear picture of what was happening. The descriptions and dialogue left me a bit ‘out of the story’ so to speak.

MORE THAN FIENDS by Maureen Child:

Didn’t enjoy the plot of this. I didn’t see the whole baby daddy thing as a plot point that was interesting. I enjoy most of Maureen Child’s other work, so I had hopes for this but I just couldn’t get into it.

IMMORTAL POSSESSION by Cassi Carver:

Interesting, nice writing style. This is one that I might re-read so I can totally follow it but on first read I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters. The plot was dramatically sensitive as well.

FOREVER ROSE by Janet Wellington:

I didn’t enjoy this one either. I couldn’t get into the whole back-in-time thing. I found myself skimming which I hate to do but I so wanted more out of this story. Didn’t get it.

WELCOME HOME, VAMPIRE by Theresa Meyers:

This was reminiscent of a typical romance where the hero tries to regain humanity by seeking someone he loved before. But it was written well and was clear to read. Definitely will try something by Ms. Meyers again.

VAMPIRE MAGIC (Blood Genie, books 1 and 2) by Sheri Whitefeather:

These books were simply fascinating. Two brother vampires that were turned into genies. Inventive and intriguing. Add in the two are loaned from their ‘master’ or owner to help people rather than personal gain and you have an interesting twist. There are catches but Ms. Whitefeather has a wonderful writing style. I’m eager to read the third book and see what happens to the vampire now turned genie who turned the brothers in the first place!

WILD NIGHTS WITH A LONE WOLF by Elisabeth Staab:

Fast-paced, sensual, and well written, Ms. Staab does a good job with Wild Nights with a Lone Wolf. Both characters are believable and interesting. I’d definitely read more by this author!

Jingle Spells by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclair, Andrea Laurence – Review

Jingle Spells is a treasure trove of holiday stories all wrapped together into one magical package!

Featuring stories from Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclaire and Andrea Laurence, this collection centers around the Evergreen siblings—a family of wizards charged with managing Christmas and all it entails!

Naughty or Nice? by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Cole Evergreen isn’t just the oldest sibling of the Evergreen clan, he’s also the CEO of Evergreen Industries. Not to mention he’s a genious. And once upon a time as an MIT student, he fell hard for Taryn Harper—a girl smarter than him! But when he was needed at home, Cole had to drop everything—including Taryn—to pick up the leadership torch and ensure his family’s way of life was preserved. Now years later, Taryn wants some type of closure! And what better way to do it than to prove Cole’s security isn’t up to snuff?

I’m a fan of Ms. Thompson’s work in any format—though preferably the cowboy one!—so I wasn’t sure what to expect with her writing a more ‘enchanted’ type but I enjoyed this one a lot. The characters came to life, and she set up the other siblings well. That Taryn was perfect for Cole was just another fabulous nugget to an interesting concept.

She’s a Mean One by Rhonda Nelson

In She’s a Mean One, Ms. Nelson brings together the once whimsical girl turned serious psychologist, Lark DeWynter and Mr. Christmas Spirit himself, Ethan Evergreen. Charged with ensuring the level of Christmas spirit stays up, Ethan must make rounds to dissuade the negative impact Lark’s more practical reasoning often causes. After several years of talk shows and bantering, Ethan quickly realizes he wants more from Lark than spirited words…only can he convince her to give him and Christmas a shot?

There is nobody who does sexy/sweet romance better than Rhonda Nelson. And this story—though short—is no exception. Ethan is loveable, yet manly. He’s smart and resourceful. And he isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. Lark is smart, sexy and independent. Yet she knows what’s in her heart. A fantastic addition to this collection, for sure!

His First Noelle by Kira Sinclair

Noelle Frost and Dash Evergreen have some troubling history. The two came together despite Noelle being a ‘mixed’ breed born of two rival clans. Though her father is Winter and she was raised with them, she never felt like one of them. But can they move past their history and make a future?

I’ll admit this wasn’t my favorite. Though I liked the characters well enough, there was just something about the insecurities of the ‘strong’ heroine and the secret keeping hero that didn’t set right. But in general it was cohesive with the rest of the stories and moved the plot along.

Silver Belle by Andrea Laurence

The final story in this collection is the only sister, Belle Evergreen. For a long time, Belle’s carried on a secret, no-strings affair with the hunky contractor, Nick St. John. But with Santa gone, Belle is the one in charge of replacing him. Her job heats up and her affair is in the way!

Being the last, this story offered up the chance of being fabulous or perhaps a dud. It came through. While not really fabulous, it was nice. I liked Nick. Belle not so much. I enjoyed her in the other stories, but this one made me feel like she was shallow and ungrateful. And somewhat a user when it came to Nick.

Ultimately, though I would recommend this entire book to anyone!

About the book…

To protect Christmas, this family of wizards will have to use a whole different kind of magic…

Part of the Winter clan, the Evergreen family is considered magical nobility. While Evergreen Industries in picturesque Gingerbread, Colorado, might look like an ordinary office building, this is where the magic of Christmas unfolds. Above Santa’s workshop, the Evergreens hold court, manage Christmas and, sometimes against their will and better judgment, fall in love. When it comes to love, the Evergreens know that sometimes you have to play a little naughty to get exactly what—or who—you want from Santa.

Celebrate the holidays with Evergreen siblings Cole, Ethan, Dash and Belle in this enchanting collection.

All of You by Christina Lee – Review

“… left me eager to read the next story in this series…”

Review by Alex C.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

All of You, the first book in Christina Lee’s New Adult Series Between Breaths, can be summed up in the same nature as the ultimate word game of five fingers (check it out in this book and Before You Break and you’ll understand) confusing, sweet, powerful, sexy, captivating. All words that describe the relationship that develops between Avery Michaels and Bennett Reynolds.

I believe you’ll love this book for Bennett alone. He’s sweet and sexy. But you might also give Avery a chance to redeem herself from being a total user if you hold out until the end. Because she’s confusing. The catch here is that Avery had a horrible childhood. Crazy, man-dependent mother who allowed one of her lovers to do unspeakable things to her daughter and then didn’t believe Avery when she tried to tell her mom what happened.

So…Avery certainly has some issues with men in general, with becoming dependent on any man, and with finding herself in the midst of the sexual needs she feels at her age. The problem with Avery (as far as I’m concerned) comes from her attitude about those she’s slept with. While there are some guys with the same attitude that I’ve adored in other books because they changed once they found the right woman and felt guilty for their past behavior, I will say I didn’t care for this same situation with the Avery.

I think it boils down to Bennett. The hot, ‘virgin’ (this term should be applied loosely cause while he’s never stuck it in…he’s done enough that he knows what he’s doing!) who Avery seems to see as a conquest. And yet, she expects him to do all the chasing…even if they are only friends. Of course, they aren’t ‘only’ anything. Their chemistry is front and center—powerful—, his need to take care of everyone around he cares about (including Avery) is just one of the endearing qualities about him, but Avery doesn’t always appreciate that until she thinks she’s lost him.

I enjoyed the book. Not as much as I did the second in the series, Before You Break (see my review), but still it was captivating enough that I read it all the way to the end just to see if Bennett got tired of Avery’s shit. She doesn’t deserve him. But by the end I had hope that she might come around and see that he’s worth fighting for and not give in to the silly notions that she’s always had…and she did. Ultimately, she realized her stupidity…and being the most awesome man every Bennett immediately forgives her. Which was sad in a way because I wanted her to really grovel and realize what a jerk she’d been to him through most of the book.

But overall All of You was a nice read. One that left me eager to read the next story in this series, Book #3 Whisper to Me, Rachel’s story. I just hope if you read this one first, you’ll give the second book a chance. It’s so AWESOME you can’t miss it.
