“…at times heart-warming and frustrating—in a not so good way.”

Unintentional Virgin by A.J. Bennett is at times heart-warming and frustrating—in a not so good way. The story starts off slow, only picking up once Karma and her friend reach the club and Jax and Karma begin their journey together. At first you might find Karma’s dilemma and the point of the book a bit comical. After all, how many times can a girl try to lose her virginity only to fail? Then again, perhaps that was fate telling her something.
Like she was waiting for Jax. Almost too good to be true, you’ve got this great guy who won’t take what’s so easily offered to him because his mother raised him right—and the thought of anyone doing the same to his five sisters turns him inside out. With an over developed sense of responsibility, Jax makes Karma an offer that he will take her virginity if she’ll spend three weeks getting to know him first. And that’s where the story begins to get heart-warming.
Jax and Karma do things on her ‘bucket’ list that make Karma face her fears, and it allows the two to grow close—after all near-death experiences have a way of pushing people sharing them together. And that’s what Karma is afraid of at the end of their time. That their feelings (or hers) aren’t true because of the forced ‘intimate’ time together. Jax has seen all of her dirty secrets and made her face her fear of never being good enough, but is that enough basis for an ever-lasting love?
I believe this story is well worth a read. I only wish the beginning pace and a few other technical items were fixed so that I could give it a higher rating. Because once you get into the story and the two are together and the story is progressing it is well-developed, fast-paced, logically laid out, and well-written. Karma begins to grow as a young adult. She faces her issues with her mother, with growing up, and with her feelings for Jax.
So my advice to Ms. Bennett is to spend a little more time tightening your opening. Because you’re drowning a fabulous story before it can float!
