Unintentional Virgin by A.J. Bennett – Review

“…at times heart-warming and frustrating—in a not so good way.”

Review by Alex C.’

Rating: ★★★★☆

Unintentional Virgin by A.J. Bennett is at times heart-warming and frustrating—in a not so good way. The story starts off slow, only picking up once Karma and her friend reach the club and Jax and Karma begin their journey together. At first you might find Karma’s dilemma and the point of the book a bit comical. After all, how many times can a girl try to lose her virginity only to fail? Then again, perhaps that was fate telling her something.

Like she was waiting for Jax. Almost too good to be true, you’ve got this great guy who won’t take what’s so easily offered to him because his mother raised him right—and the thought of anyone doing the same to his five sisters turns him inside out. With an over developed sense of responsibility, Jax makes Karma an offer that he will take her virginity if she’ll spend three weeks getting to know him first. And that’s where the story begins to get heart-warming.

Jax and Karma do things on her ‘bucket’ list that make Karma face her fears, and it allows the two to grow close—after all near-death experiences have a way of pushing people sharing them together. And that’s what Karma is afraid of at the end of their time. That their feelings (or hers) aren’t true because of the forced ‘intimate’ time together. Jax has seen all of her dirty secrets and made her face her fear of never being good enough, but is that enough basis for an ever-lasting love?

I believe this story is well worth a read. I only wish the beginning pace and a few other technical items were fixed so that I could give it a higher rating. Because once you get into the story and the two are together and the story is progressing it is well-developed, fast-paced, logically laid out, and well-written. Karma begins to grow as a young adult. She faces her issues with her mother, with growing up, and with her feelings for Jax.

So my advice to Ms. Bennett is to spend a little more time tightening your opening. Because you’re drowning a fabulous story before it can float!

Dark Wolf Running by Rhyannon Byrd – Review

darkwolfrunning-rhyannonbyrd“…something missing in this particular installment.”

by Larissa M.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Rhyannon Byrd’s latest Bloodrunners’ book, Dark Wolf Running, takes us back into the world of mystic wolves and the mixed breeds who protect them. Intriguing, fast-paced and full of emotion, this story takes a hard look at the conspiracy that’s plaguing the Lycan’s and more specifically, the Dark Wolf bloodline.

After Elise Drake’s brutal attack, she’s kept to herself and stopped embracing her heritage. She has a need to keep herself apart from everyone, but especially a Bloodrunner who makes her feel things she’s not sure she’s ready to embrace. Wyatt Pallaton is a force to be reckoned with on his own, but add in his steely determination to make Elise stop running from what’s happening between them and he’s unstoppable.

Only conspiracies aren’t always in people’s heads and when those responsible for her brutal attack decide they’re not done with Elise, Wyatt is determined to make sure she’s safe no matter the cost…even if it’s his own life.

Ms. Byrd’s way with the mystical and dark world of wolves and witches leaves you enthralled. And while the writing was well done and the overall saga storyline, I still felt there was something missing in this particular installment. Almost as though the book was formulaic and not necessarily unique. The hero and heroine were fabulously written, but I didn’t feel they connected on a personal level. There wasn’t anything that made me think they loved each other, but maybe that our hero felt the need to possess her. It was a bit different for the heroine but not much. That’s the reason behind the lower rating. But it’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the read enough to read more in this series…only not to re-read this story.

Case: Tracking down a Butter Bandit

Agent note: This case is gonna sizzle…

On the surface, it seems like an almost ridiculous assignment. A thief has been breaking into pastry chef Mariette Levine’s shop. And the only thing taken? Organic butter. But one night, Mariette herself is attacked, and Ranger Security assigns agent Jackson Martin to guard their favorite chef—closely!

Unfortunately, the ultra-dishy Jackson also makes Mariette’s reserve melt faster than…er, butter. Which is bad. In a very, very good way.

Night Moves by Eden Bradley is a quick, sensual read that inflames your senses!

Kate has a secret fetish, one that ultimately leads her into the wrong train cabin…but into the arms of Mr. Right! At just around 37 pages, this little Spice Brief is just that…spicy and brief. So it’s perfect for when you don’t have time to get fully involved in the characters but well-written and interesting enough not to be just a bunch of sex scenes. If you like a touch of erotic romance in your stories, this one is definitely for you!

Seduction of a Highland Lass by Maya Banks

    Seduction of a Highland Lass

Maya Banks has a new release this month! Yea! I love her historical romances and I love this purple cover. It doesn’t hurt the hero is cute!  LOL!

The downside for me is that I kind of hate the ‘bed’ pose. I can’t leave it lying around or run around with it in hand. My kids are at an age that this kind overt pose just isn’t ignored. Too sexy.  Not for reading, but definitely for being seen reading it around the house.  And before everyone comments that I should use a cover for the cover…that draws attention to the fact it’s something they shouldn’t see. Oh, well. I guess that’s why they have ebooks! 😉
