What to Do with a Bad Boy by Marie Harte – Review

Reviewed by Larissa M.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Marie Harte’s final book in her super sexy McCauley Brothers series, What to Do with a Bad Boy, fittingly ties up this series…but is a bit of a disappointment. Not as fabulous as the previous books, this one still gives you an interesting romance by bringing together widow Mike McCauley and spunky Delilah Webster.

In her previous McCauley books, Ms. Harte paired together each of the McCauley brothers with the love of their lives. A fitting female to match them. So I was a little worried about how she would tie together the diehard widow Mike. If you’ve read the other books, you know he had his ‘soul mate’ and lost her during the birth of their son. And he was very adamant about never loving again. Now a single father, Mike is more than a little guarded about dating and being set up. In this story however, he finally gives in to his mother’s attempts and goes out with a neighbor of his mothers who is just like the woman he lost. He also ‘dates’ Del. Only he doesn’t really do much more than sleep with Del through most of the book. There were times I wanted to smack him up side the head for stringing her along and using her. But when the light dawned he was the McCauley type man we know and love. Unfortunately for me it felt like it should have come sooner. My lack of enthusiasm wasn’t so much a struggle with Mike falling in love, but he was stupid about it. He hurt Del and I’m not sure I would have forgiven him as easy as she did. But ultimately, Del was awesome. She had her own personal issues, but she got through them and let herself fall for Mike and when she did she gave him everything. She was near perfect even when dealing with the spiteful other woman.

All-in-all this was one that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss if reading the whole series. But standalone it wasn’t as great as the others. As with the other books, though, I did enjoy seeing a glimpse at where the other couples were in their lives. It’s neat to see how they are still going strong.

Served Hot by Marie Harte – Review

Reviewed by Cara M.

Rating: ★★★★★

Following up on the super fabulous first book, Served Cold, Marie Harte gives you the second book in her Best Revenge series. Served Hot will keep you on edge wondering just how Dexter will win Maya over…and just why Maya is fighting him so hard!

When three friends get together for their weekly wine night, they make a pack to get revenge on the boys (now men!) who did them wrong in high school. For Maya Werner, she really wants to get back at Dexter Black for blackmailing her into being his prom date. Only what Maya really wants is to know why he did it in the first place!

And when award-winning photojournalist Dexter turns up back in town to open a small studio, it seems like the perfect time to get started. Only fate often has the upper hand, and when Dex witnesses Maya doing something that could get her into trouble…again!…he has the upper hand. He uses it to once again blackmail her into dating him!

Ms. Harte has written a warm, moving story that makes you laugh at the same time as it makes you sigh. Her characters are so well written. Dex is the hunky, smart and definitely drool worthy hero. He also has no trouble following his feelings back to the one girl he always crushed on. And he knows Maya so well. Her prickly, independent nature doesn’t put him off. He knows exactly how to manipulate her into being where they both belong. Maya is a little harder to like. She is prickly, almost to the point of being selfish or off-putting at times, but she’s loyal to a fault. Her endearing quality is what redeems her. She has a soft center. Her prickly shell hides it. But it’s there. So all-in-all these two are well suited.  A definite must read!

A Last Chance Christmas by Vicki Lewis Thompson – Review

Reviewed by Zara B.

Rating: ★★★★★

Continuing her Sons of Chance series, Vicki Lewis Thompson offers you a fabulous little romance with your holiday spirit!

Ben Radcliffe had one goal in mind when he delivered a custom saddle to the Last Chance, get paid and possibly some referrals. But when Jack Chance invites him to stay for a few days to see his saddle revealed, he can’t pass up the chance. Just like he can’t pass up the chance to engage in a little flirtation with academic Molly Gallagher—a Chance cousin.

Molly is at the ranch working on a genealogy project for the Chance/Gallagher family. More comfortable with her computer and old journals, she’s surprised at the attraction between her and Ben. And even more surprised when she acts on it!

Ms. Thompson has a winner here. While not intricate or all that ‘busy’ plot wise, I enjoy the book immensely. More so than even her last set of Sons of Chance books. I felt Molly was mousy but interesting. She wasn’t really a pushover but not exactly brash. Almost clueless about her appeal. It was fun to watch her and Ben interact. Ben was a hunk. He was modest and very sweet. All of his interactions with others showed a vulnerability and possibly a yearning to be part of something he’d never had before…family. The book did set up a future book, and I found I’m eager to read the next installment!

About the book…

A Christmas kiss from a cowboy…

Ben Radcliffe reckons it’ll be a cold day in hell before he considers a serious relationship or family of his own—with good reason. When he delivers a "secret" present to the Last Chance Ranch, however, Ben catches a glimpse of what family could be. And suddenly this lone cowboy finds himself under the mistletoe…planting one heck of a kiss on a stunning woman!

Genealogist and academic Molly Gallagher is all about family. And even if Ben’s secrets make him as skittish as a wild mustang, there’s nothing Molly loves more than an enigma. Especially a ridiculously sexy one! But the magic of Christmas—and the Last Chance Ranch—might not be enough to wrangle a cowboy who can’t trust himself…

SEDUCTIVE SUPERNATURALS: 12 Tales of Shapeshifters, Vampires & Sexy Spirits by Erin Quinn, Caridad Piñeiro, Erin Kellison, Lisa Kessler, Chris Marie Green, Mary Leo – Review

Reviewed by Larissa M.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Seductive Supernatural’s is a collection of 12 tales ranging from shape shifters and vampires to spirits. In reviewing an anthology, I usually take each book and do a detailed review about each. Since there are so many here I’m not sure I’ll do that. Especially since so many are not really worth reading…in my opinion…but there are some that stood out and I wished were showcased separately so I wouldn’t have to pull up such a large file to read just that one book again—if I wanted to do so. But since they are and I was asked for an honest review, here goes.

This is one that I didn’t really care for. The writing wasn’t clear and engaging. I didn’t find the characters really that relatable and I didn’t find the whole plot believable.

VAMPIRE REBORN by Caridad Pineiro:

I found myself skimming this one. The story did not engage me from the get-go so I kept hoping something would snap me into the story. It didn’t.

SHADOW FALL by Erin Kellison:

I did like this one. Erin Kellison left me engaged in the plot and I found I enjoyed seeing what would happen with Annabella. Definitely not a fresh plot, but an interesting one.

NIGHT ANGEL by Lisa Kessler:

Mystical and interesting, I enjoyed the hero and heroine in this short story. I found the idea of the heroine being deaf intriguing, but I was a bit disappointed that wasn’t fixed for her in the end. But alas, she did get a hunky, near-God instead. I would have enjoyed more of this story.

SHADOWS TILL SUNRISE by Chris Marie Green:

Again, found this one hard to get into. I didn’t really get a clear picture of what was happening. The descriptions and dialogue left me a bit ‘out of the story’ so to speak.

Though I had high hopes for this one as a romance with a ghost/spirit seemed very interesting. Add in the boss/assistant scenario and I knew it should be good. But again, found this one hard to get into. I didn’t really get a clear picture of what was happening. The descriptions and dialogue left me a bit ‘out of the story’ so to speak.

MORE THAN FIENDS by Maureen Child:

Didn’t enjoy the plot of this. I didn’t see the whole baby daddy thing as a plot point that was interesting. I enjoy most of Maureen Child’s other work, so I had hopes for this but I just couldn’t get into it.

Interesting, nice writing style. This is one that I might re-read so I can totally follow it but on first read I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters. The plot was dramatically sensitive as well.

FOREVER ROSE by Janet Wellington:

I didn’t enjoy this one either. I couldn’t get into the whole back-in-time thing. I found myself skimming which I hate to do but I so wanted more out of this story. Didn’t get it.

WELCOME HOME, VAMPIRE by Theresa Meyers:

This was reminiscent of a typical romance where the hero tries to regain humanity by seeking someone he loved before. But it was written well and was clear to read. Definitely will try something by Ms. Meyers again.

VAMPIRE MAGIC (Blood Genie, books 1 and 2) by Sheri Whitefeather:

These books were simply fascinating. Two brother vampires that were turned into genies. Inventive and intriguing. Add in the two are loaned from their ‘master’ or owner to help people rather than personal gain and you have an interesting twist. There are catches but Ms. Whitefeather has a wonderful writing style. I’m eager to read the third book and see what happens to the vampire now turned genie who turned the brothers in the first place!

Fast-paced, sensual, and well written, Ms. Staab does a good job with Wild Nights with a Lone Wolf. Both characters are believable and interesting. I’d definitely read more by this author!

Her Avenging Angel by Felicity Heaton – Review

Rating: ★★★★☆

Felicity Heaton’s Her Angel series continues strong with the 7th book, Her Avenging Angel, featuring Nevar and Lysia. Two strong, mysterious individuals with dark pasts, these two are made for each other. From their strong personalities to their endeavoring quest for love, the two will draw you into their world and keep you turning the page!

Nevar was an angel of Heaven before he made a contract with the King of Demons. Now, he’s forced to guard the Great Destroyer in an endless pursuit to keep both Heaven and Hell and all that’s between safe. Only you can’t change the inevitable so when it comes time to fight the Great Destroyer, will Nevar be able to sacrifice Lysia for all mankind?

I’m a fan of Ms. Heaton’s angel series. There hasn’t been one I haven’t enjoyed—whether short or long. She creates a vivid world and brings out the humanity in ethereal beings that might not be realistic if she weren’t such a masterful word spinner. In this latest installment, I thought I wouldn’t like Nevar. He wasn’t very honorable or caring in the previous book. But the way Ms. Heaton spun his story not only made you fall for the guy, but wish things could be different for him through to the last page. In contrast, I didn’t think I’d ever get used to or like Lysia. She has a naive, almost lamb to the slaughter vibe to her. Then come out her teeth, so to speak. Having survived a fierce battle that she can’t recall, she’s lost in the human world. She seeks to find someone to help her, so when she comes across Nevar it’s inevitable that he immediately recognizes her language and his need to protect her even if he doesn’t know why. But that’s not all he feels for the beauty. Their attraction is instantaneous. When he learns the Great Destroyer has awakened, though, he puts all his feelings for her aside and does what he’s commanded to do. In the end, I loved how it played out. I was doubtful Ms. Heaton could pull off the conclusion she did. It felt like she’d written herself into a corner a time or two, but it all worked out the way it was supposed. And only made me eager to read the next installment!

About the book…

Once a proud angel of Heaven, Nevar is now a servant of Hell, bound to a new master—the King of Demons. Consumed by darkness and driven to seek revenge, he set in motion a series of events that awakened the Great Destroyer, a force that will bring about the apocalypse. Now, he is the creature’s master and the fate of our world rests in the hands of an angel with only darkness in his heart.

Lost in the mortal realm without any recollection of how she came to be there, Lysia is only aware that she has survived a great battle. When she stumbles into a demon bar, she finds more than a chance to discover what happened to her—she finds a dark and deadly angel warrior who stirs fire in her veins and awakens soul-searing passion she cannot deny.

With the mounting threat of the Great Destroyer, the forces of Heaven and Hell against him, and a band of dangerous angels intent on capturing Lysia on his heels, can Nevar protect the beautiful woman who is light to his darkness and find the strength to save the world?

Jingle Spells by Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclair, Andrea Laurence – Review

Reviewed by Cara M.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Jingle Spells is a treasure trove of holiday stories all wrapped together into one magical package!

Featuring stories from Vicki Lewis Thompson, Rhonda Nelson, Kira Sinclaire and Andrea Laurence, this collection centers around the Evergreen siblings—a family of wizards charged with managing Christmas and all it entails!

Naughty or Nice? by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Cole Evergreen isn’t just the oldest sibling of the Evergreen clan, he’s also the CEO of Evergreen Industries. Not to mention he’s a genious. And once upon a time as an MIT student, he fell hard for Taryn Harper—a girl smarter than him! But when he was needed at home, Cole had to drop everything—including Taryn—to pick up the leadership torch and ensure his family’s way of life was preserved. Now years later, Taryn wants some type of closure! And what better way to do it than to prove Cole’s security isn’t up to snuff?

I’m a fan of Ms. Thompson’s work in any format—though preferably the cowboy one!—so I wasn’t sure what to expect with her writing a more ‘enchanted’ type but I enjoyed this one a lot. The characters came to life, and she set up the other siblings well. That Taryn was perfect for Cole was just another fabulous nugget to an interesting concept.

She’s a Mean One by Rhonda Nelson

In She’s a Mean One, Ms. Nelson brings together the once whimsical girl turned serious psychologist, Lark DeWynter and Mr. Christmas Spirit himself, Ethan Evergreen. Charged with ensuring the level of Christmas spirit stays up, Ethan must make rounds to dissuade the negative impact Lark’s more practical reasoning often causes. After several years of talk shows and bantering, Ethan quickly realizes he wants more from Lark than spirited words…only can he convince her to give him and Christmas a shot?

There is nobody who does sexy/sweet romance better than Rhonda Nelson. And this story—though short—is no exception. Ethan is loveable, yet manly. He’s smart and resourceful. And he isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. Lark is smart, sexy and independent. Yet she knows what’s in her heart. A fantastic addition to this collection, for sure!

His First Noelle by Kira Sinclair

Noelle Frost and Dash Evergreen have some troubling history. The two came together despite Noelle being a ‘mixed’ breed born of two rival clans. Though her father is Winter and she was raised with them, she never felt like one of them. But can they move past their history and make a future?

I’ll admit this wasn’t my favorite. Though I liked the characters well enough, there was just something about the insecurities of the ‘strong’ heroine and the secret keeping hero that didn’t set right. But in general it was cohesive with the rest of the stories and moved the plot along.

Silver Belle by Andrea Laurence

The final story in this collection is the only sister, Belle Evergreen. For a long time, Belle’s carried on a secret, no-strings affair with the hunky contractor, Nick St. John. But with Santa gone, Belle is the one in charge of replacing him. Her job heats up and her affair is in the way!

Being the last, this story offered up the chance of being fabulous or perhaps a dud. It came through. While not really fabulous, it was nice. I liked Nick. Belle not so much. I enjoyed her in the other stories, but this one made me feel like she was shallow and ungrateful. And somewhat a user when it came to Nick.

Ultimately, though I would recommend this entire book to anyone!

Above Santa’s workshop, the Evergreens hold court, manage Christmas and, sometimes against their will and better judgment, fall in love. When it comes to love, the Evergreens know that sometimes you have to play a little naughty to get exactly what—or who—you want from Santa.
